Family members then searched for Bledsoe and her two great-grandchildren, 5-year-old Emily and 4-year-old James, in area shelters and hospitals, hoping they were among the 38,000 people who have fled the danger in Shasta County, said the children's aunt, Shelley Hoskison.

"It's not unusual in a large bushfire situation, or wildfire as they call them, to ask for global aid, but the ones that we are seeing in the north-western parts of the United States are pretty bad", he said.

When Mr Bledsoe rushed home, he was turned back by police.

Meanwhile, some evacuations orders have been lifted around a Northern California wildfire area near the city of Redding.

Redding Police Chief Roger Moore said: "This fire is scary to us". He said he received a phone call from his wife 15 minutes after he left saying he needed to get home because the fire was approaching. "It's just unbelievable knowing you don't have a house to go back to".

"The fire looks like a tornado".

Officials said the Carr Fire was about 23 percent contained of late Monday.

The National Multi-Agency Coordination Group (MAC) in the United States formally requested assistance over the weekend, seeking 188 specialist firefighters from Australia and New Zealand.

About 12,000 firefighters were battling 17 significant fires Sunday in California, she said. Captain Brian Hughes, 33, was hit by a falling tree - the second firefighter to die in the blaze. "We grieve his loss".

Six people have been killed by a blaze known as the Carr fire in the northern town of Redding.

At least seven people were still missing in Shasta County, California, as the monstrous Carr Fire continued to grow Sunday, authorities said. It also said that the Bledsoes were not under evacuation orders when the fire engulfed their home.

The department posted on Facebook today "Once the evacuation zones have been reopened for citizens to return to their homes, unfortunately, some Redding citizens may discover they have been victimized by looters".

"It's just hard ― it's so overwhelming, it's hard to put into words", Shyla told HuffPost on Monday. "This is just unbelievable. Hold on. Grandpa's coming'". "We're all in it together, that's for sure".

"Everyone we come into contact [with] in those neighborhoods, if they don't have a legitimate reason to be there, if we don't arrest them for looting, they'll be arrested for something else", he said. "The fire continues to burn through a large wilderness area", said Doug Binnewies, the Mariposa County sheriff and coroner.

One of those who experienced the destruction firsthand was Redding resident Hannalora Lewis, who was woken up by her mother Thursday morning and told to evacuate.

"She is part of our store family and Reptile Exhibit. Please don´t be afraid of her - she is lost and scared!"

Nevertheless authorities "are very encouraged with the fire status" in Redding, said Cal Fire incident manager Bret Gouvea.

Hughes said Monday that he is using sprinklers to wet his roof and removing yard plants that could catch fire.

Gouvea, however, said he was wary of unpredictable weather. The River Fire six miles north of Hopland and the Ranch Fire eight miles northeast of Ukiah. As flames leaped from one pine to the next, creating a canopy of fire, his team stopped its truck in a driveway near scattered oak trees, expecting the wildfire to continue unchecked.

President Donald Trump declared the fire an emergency on Saturday, authorising federal funds for disaster relief efforts.
